Hi Everyone.
By now, I'm sure you've read or heard about the Governor's budget proposal for next year. As in recent years, the state budget, as it relates to school district funding, continues to look worse instead of better. The biggest impact for next year is the elimination of the 3.17% COLA for next year that was built into our multi-year budget projection. The impact of that loss for next year is approximately $207 per ADA.
The other impact is the loss of transportation funding. We typically get approximately $39,000 per year for transportation. According to the Governor's proposal, we would lose that funding next year. There is a bill pending now that might change that to an equal hit of $41 dollars per ADA to help soften the blow for districts with large transportation budgets. If that passes, our share would be a loss of $243,000 instead of $39,000.
Finally, if that isn't bad enough, the Governor's proposal is continqent on the passage of a November ballot measure for a temporary tax. If that doesn't get on the ballot or if it does and doesn't pass, school districts will be cut $370 per ADA. This would be a cut to our budget of approximately $2.1 million.
Over the next month or so, we will work with COEA, CSEA, the management team, and our Board of Education to come up with agreements to resolve the projected and possible short-falls for next year.
If you have specific questions in the meantime, please feel free to contact me. The leadership in your bargaining groups and I will keep you updated as new developments occur.
