Certified Job Steward Program
The certified job steward is the backbone of every functioning chapter and is a vital represetational link between bargaining unit employees, their union, and site-level management. The job steward's primary role is to enforce CSEA contract at informal and formal levels of the grievance procedure.
The certification process requires completion of basic and advanced job steward training. For 12 month following completion of basic job steward, job stewards will work in their chapters, documenting the activities they do each month in the six-core participation requirement of the program. The core requirements are:
1. Represent unit members relative to work-related concerns and issue in the work place.
2. Represent bargaining unit members in matters related to various disciplinary actions.
3. Provide contract education for bargaining unit members.
4. Regularly attend chapter and other designated meetings.
5. Enforce the collective bargaining agreement.
6. Provide communication between CSEA bargaining committee and bargaining unit members, and provide data/input to the bargaining committee.
7. Certification must be completed within 3 years of taking Basic Steward Training.
7 Steps To Becoming A Certified Job Steward
1. Attend basic job steward training.
2. Check chapter constitution and bylaws for compliance. Fill out "Authorization to Participate in CSEA Job Steward Program" form, and obtain authorization and signature from your chapter president. Obtain your Labor Relations Representative's signature.
3. Participate in Steward Activities that meet the core requirements, and document for the next 12 months. Work with LRR in learning the position.
4. Attend Advanced Job Steward training.
5. Attend Know Your Rights workshop.
6. Submit documentation to LRR, after 12 months of participation, for verification and approval.
7. Receive Job Steward Jacket.
