Classified employees are the heartbeat of our schools and community colleges. From transporting and feeding students to teaching them vital skills and ensuring that schools are operating smoothly, classified employees are integral to public education. California’s Legislature recognizes the important contributions of classified school employees and declared the third full week of May as “Classified School Employee Week” (CSEW).
Each year as I travel more extensively across this state, I meet even more great people who have devoted their careers to serving our public schools. We don’t do it for the money, or the glory. We do it because we get fulfillment by working with young people and having the opportunity to make their days a bit brighter and their lives more enriched. There is no doubt that “We are the Heartbeat of our Schools!”
In the early morning of the school day, while the 8 million students of California public schools and community colleges are still asleep, classified school employees are already at work to make the day a success for them. Custodians do walkthroughs. Bus drivers inspect buses. Food service workers prepare meals. As students from Eureka to El Centro begin to pour into schools, classified employees welcome them.
CSEA events and activities are being planned up and down the state to Celebrate Classified School Employee Week. Find out what’s happening in your area.
The television documentary series Inside California Education profiles classified employees and shows the vital contributions classified employees make.
