Everyday Hero - Jessica Chaidez-Hernandez

Jessica Chaidez-Hernandez, Para-Educator/Bilingual at the Van Buren Early Childhood Pre-School, Desert Sands Unified School District, will be recognized at the Tuesday, October 17, Board meeting.

Last week, Jessica's day should have ended at 11:30 a.m. being that she is a 3-hour paraeducator. However, the afternoon paraeducator for her class was unable to work that day and the school could not find a sub to cover. They asked Jessica if she would stay and cover and with no hesitation Jessica said yes. The regular teacher was also out that day and a substitute was covering for her as well.

Students came in from play and sat on the rug. The substitute teacher and Jessica were cleaning the tables and getting lunches ready. Jessica heard a noise and went over to check on the students. She found a 4-year-old student laying on the floor unresponsive and not breathing. Without hesitation, she knew what had to be done...CPR. On the second set of 30, the child opened her eyes and started to breath. The substitute teacher communicated with the administrative staff who called 911. Happy to report, the student is now home with her family.

Jessica is a fine example of CSEA's "Everyday Heroes." She will be recognized at Tuesday night's Board meeting at 7 p.m.

"I’m so proud of her for her quick actions to save a child's life. I’m so happy to say she is part of our CSEA family!"

- Debra Canero, President Chapter 106
