California school librarian wins Recognizing Inspirational School Employees (RISE) Award, to be honored at ceremony in Washington D.C.

Maria Tapia, a Librarian at Ocean View Junior High School in Oxnard, California and member of the California School Employees Association (CSEA), will be honored in Washington D.C. as one of the 2018 Recognizing Inspiring School Employees (RISE) Award winners. The award is being given to five individuals from across the country who are doing extraordinary and inspirational things in their schools and communities to promote quality education, foster positive learning environments, and ensure student success.

Ben Valdepeña  elected President of the California School Employees Association
Members at the 91st Annual Conference of the California School Employees Association voted Ben Valdepeña as the union’s Association President for the next two years. Valdepeña is the Association’s 45th president since 1927.

CSEA Board of Directors opposes effort to recall Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon
The California School Employees Board of Directors voted today to oppose the recall effort launched against California Speaker of the Assembly Anthony Rendon.

“CSEA strongly supports SB 562 and single-payer, and we will continue to advocate for passage,” Association President Ben Valdepeña said. “However, we do not agree with the attacks on Speaker Rendon, who we know is also a single-payer supporter.”
