An Overview of Special Education Laws
Class Length: 90 minutes
This training, facilitated by two senior attorneys with California Disability Rights, will provide paraeducators with knowledge of the education laws and processes that protect students with disabilities in their schools and communities. It will cover the structure of the two main federal laws that govern special education, the main legal protections, the process, and the relationship between parents, educators, and school districts. Dispute resolution systems will also be discussed and explained. We will include a brief overview of Disability Rights California’s state policy efforts regarding education for students with disabilities. Participants are invited to offer their input and ask questions during and at the end of the presentation.

Senior Attorney, Disability Rights California
Taymour Ravandi is a senior attorney with Disability Rights California. He represents parents and students at special education meetings and hearings, comments on pending legislation, develops and edits educational manuals, and provides training to parents, students, educators and service providers on special education laws and practices throughout California.
Senior Policy Attorney, Youth Practice Group
Allegra Cira Fischer is a Senior Policy Attorney with the Youth Practice Group at Disability Rights California. She focuses on state legislative advocacy to advance education equity for students with disabilities, school discipline, and securing supportive, community-based mental and behavioral healthcare for youth. Allegra works in partnership with impacted community members to advance positive systemic change and is an active advocate in her local California public school district.
